University of Texas at Austin Named Among Best Global Universities
U.S. News & World Report placed UT in the top 10 in the U.S. and top-tier worldwide in a variety of science subjects.
The University of Texas at Austin ranks among the world’s best universities and in the top 10 in the United States in new global subject rankings in the sciences, according to U.S. News & World Report’s latest Best Global Universities rankings.
More than 2,250 schools around the world were included in the latest rankings, which are based on 13 different indicators of schools’ research impact, reputation and collaborations.
UT Austin ranked 12th in the world in space science, an area of research that encompasses both astronomy and astrophysics. This was one of several science subjects where the University also ranked in the top 10 nationally:
- Physical Chemistry – 6th in the U.S.
- Nanoscience and Nanotechnology – 6th in the U.S.
- Condensed Matter Physics – 7th in the U.S.
- Space Science – 8th in the U.S.
- Chemistry – 8th in the U.S.
- Materials Science – 9th in the U.S.
- Polymer Science – 10th in the U.S.
Among all public and private U.S. universities, UT Austin ranked No. 24 (8th highest among public universities in the United States). The University further earned top-50 global rankings in several general subject areas, including physics (35th worldwide, 17th in the U.S.), mathematics (44th worldwide, 17th in the U.S.), social sciences and public health (37th worldwide, 16th in the U.S.) and geosciences (33rd worldwide and 16th in the U.S.).
This is the second time this month that the University placed among the top institutions worldwide in a global ranking of academic excellence. The Center for World University Rankings for 2026 assessed institutions’ research impact and faculty distinctions, alongside the educational and employment successes of alumni. In June, UT Austin was the only university in Texas that emerged in the CWUR rankings within the top .02% of institutions worldwide.
